running out of vertical space

I'm worried about running out of vertical space. In order to keep as much growing space as possible, what is the smallest reservoir I could use?

I would say 3 gallons to fill the system and 3 gallons as backup so a 6 gallon tank would work. I like to use at least 3 times as much as it takes to fill the system. Find a large flat container like the kind they slide under beds to save vertical space.
