Long enough to wet the roots every 15 or 20 minutes.

No, not exactly. Everyone's hydroponic system is a little different. Some may take a little longer or less time to completely fill your system than someone else's. Basically once the system is completely filled and you shut the pump off, set it so it goes back on again in 15-20 minutes. Let it completely fill again, then shut it off and wait 15-20 minutes then turn it back on again. You will probably wind up with 2-3 on and off cycles per hour. though your timer may have 30 min minimum on and of cycles, in which case you may want to set it for 30 min on, then 30 min off, then 30 on and 30 off, basically all day. If you decide that the plants are still drying out between watering's you may want to get a different timer.

This keeps the roots from going more than 20 minutes without water. Although there are many factors that will affect how fast the roots dry out like the temperature, humidity and type of growing medium you are using. It's important to keep the plants roots from drying out in a hydroponic system and will do so much faster than soil grown plants. You will notice them start to wilt as the roots become dry, and you don't want to see any signs of wilting at all.

Of coarse if you are using a N.F.T. type of hydroponic system the pump will be running all day and never shut off. Also a Water Culture System does not even require a pump, so no need to set on and off times. Just leave the "Air pump" on 24-7 with this type of system. Also an Aeroponic System will require a much more precise on and off times, mainly because an (Aeroponic system) generally does not use any growing medium that holds in moisture, so they just dry out much faster.
