Hi, this is the garden that I am making.

I have a huge Southern facing window wall.

I took ideas from a lot of the posts here.

I needed to minimize that possibility of a leak ruining the carpet, so I designed it to have all the connections except the water level drain to be below the lid. A tee fitting allows air in for the drain and it is also is a place to pump out the old nutrient and to add more.

The gallon jugs being somewhat square should give it more of a feeling and appearance of a flat growing surface when it's finished.

Nice compact setup. I don't know if you were planing to or not but you might want to light proof the reservoir and the gallon jugs to prevent algae growth. I simply give them a few coats of black spray paint (on the outside) to light proof it, then white to reflect light and keep the nutrients from absorbing heat. I look forward to seeing it with plants growing.

Yeah I tried that. Refreshed a couple times, cleared my cache, logged out and back in a few times....even tried a different browser. Nada.

Whipped out the ol' iPhone and browsed to here with that and they show up just fine. Heh. Stupid work computer...

Aha...figured it out. I looked at the page source and saw that the images are links to pictures hosted on apartment0.net which is blocked by our web proxy here at work. I guess since they are embedded images I don't get the big "ACCESS DENIED" page I'd get by going to the site directly...hehe. Few hits in the "naughty log" for me I guess...will have to make sure to only check this thread from home or on my iPhone...lol.

I found more gallon jugs today and glued them on with silicon.

I'll try uploading the pictures here since some can't seem to connect to Apartment0.net .

The last pic shows all the jugs glued on. After a test run, I plan to fill them with pellets and trim the jugs more level, maybe I will get some safe-edge?

I'm not sure what I will grow yet, something easy. I plan on some failure as this is my first try. I'm also open to suggestions?

I would suggest trying to build any system so that it's easy to do maintenance on while the plants are growing, for me that's very important. you don't want to dread doing a nutrient change or checking pH because it's difficult to get to the nutrients. Cleaning the pump and reservoir should also be done regularly. I fear that your system although is a nice and compact design might be difficult to maintain. Like taking the lid off to get the pump out and cleaning the reservoir. I figure you will need to move the whole thing outside first to clean it out because you need to protect the carpet. This could be a problem because with the plants, growing medium and nutrient solution in it, it will become to heavy to move around easily.

Without knowing all the details it is difficult to tell if the silicone will be enough to hold the jugs in place, especial when it has all the weight in it and you need to do the maintenance to the system. 100% Silicone does not have strength to it, though it's completely waterproof, it will peal off with pressure applied.

Just my two cents :p

One thing you consider is placing the pump inside of a piece of pantyhose to keep the debris out of the pump. It's easier to wash and replace the pantyhose than the pump.

Ya, most pumps have a built in replaceable filter, but the fountain pump I got didn't come with a filter, I cut a piece of filter to fit it though, but the pantyhose idea would certainly work as well (at least until you got a run in your hose :rolleyes:). Nether are expensive and both are replaceable, but it should be screened/filtered one way or the other.

Have you gotten your system running yet? I have not grown lettuces yet but plan to soon. I understand they are a low light, cool temperature, water loving plant, and are fairly easy to grow. Although I am not sure it's the best fit for your system, because they have relatively small root systems. I think the gallon jugs being used for the growing chamber for lettuces would be an overkill.

I have grown lettuce in a DWC and an a E&F system and have had good luck with both. I have used both T5 lights and my 400 watt CHM. I keep the ppm low on lettuce as it is a lite feeder.

Ah, yes, I am using my new toy to water the just sprouting seedlings. I planted some cherry tomatoes, some beefmaster and some zucchini. I just set it to come on 4 times a day to keep the peat pellets damp.
I haven't enclosed it, but I bought some crushed granite. I need to wash it, and then figure a way to use it to make a single flat surface.

As I said earlier, I expect some failures. My expertise is in dirt, grass to be exact. My gardens have all been for enjoyment, and my best achievements have been accidental!

Are these special varieties of these plants? Because I would think they would be too big for a living room. They will also need a trellis to grow on as they get bigger.
Better a happy accident than a unhappy one.

My Zucchini get good sized, also growing that inside you will need to learn how to hand pollenate.
