Using a float switch exposed to mothballs

Ive recently been building a hydroponics system that I'd like to use to grow vegetables. I bought a float switch to operate the pump, but when it arrived it stank of mothballs, and even unopened in the package had some kind of white powder on it, possibly the source of the odor. I may by a timer for this setup instead, but My question is whether or not the float switch is safe for use immersed in a solution that will feed plants that are meant to be eaten. Thanks.

Hello Anachro,
I don't see a problem, something that small cant leach enough pesticide into the water to be an issue. After a few days/weeks the smell will dissipate. But if you want just rinse it off, soak it in soapy water and give it a quick scrub. If it still gives off a smell put it in a container and cover it with baking soda for a day or two as well.
