Prevent algae growth

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I'm new to hydroponics and have a few beginner questions. In the attached file you can see one of my mesh baskets with a bean plant. As you can see the clay doesn't reach the top of the mesh basket, which exposes the water to light causing algae growth.

Shall I fill the mesh basket with clay and lift the plant up, so that the roots are just below the top of the clay. This would mean, that most of the roots are never exposed to water.

Or shall I fill the mesh basket with clay without lifting the plant? This would mean that parts of the green stem are submerged in clay.

Greetings

Matthias

It looks like all you would need to do is fill the baskets with more grow rock. You want the water level to be about 2 inches below the top of the growing media. That way the top of the growing medium is dry, but the main root ball can still get plenty of moisture.

P.S.
I'm assuming this is a flood and drain system and not a NFT system.
