do HIDs put off much heat, and are they practical for small spaces? will homeys depot carry them, and what do i ask for?

Yes a lot. I use an enclosed light hood with a blower to suck the heat out of the grow room.
250 W. or less may be OK with small spaces but any light will put out heat and need venting.
