Ya, most pumps have a built in replaceable filter, but the fountain pump I got didn't come with a filter, I cut a piece of filter to fit it though, but the pantyhose idea would certainly work as well (at least until you got a run in your hose ). Nether are expensive and both are replaceable, but it should be screened/filtered one way or the other.
