Picked my first zuchinni today!!! They are really starting to produce, was going to have stir fry, but I got called into work Cantalope are also really starting to produce, probably have about a dozen right now that appear to have pollinated correctly and are growing. I see several more, just waiting for the flowers to open. So far my favorite system.....

Those look awesome. Too bad I am not a fan of them lol I actually have a small list of vegetables I will eat lol. but i will eat them like candy so it makes up for it lol

The system really seems to be working well. I hope you don't run into the same problems like you did with the roots on the other. I am not sure abou the root systems of the plants and how big they get, but the plants are looking very impressive.

[QUOTE=jamromhem;7822] I actually have a small list of vegetables I will eat lol.

I only like a few also, but I am going to try them all. I mostly like my veggies stir fried with some chicken. We use the chow mein packet from the grocery store and add all sorts of veggies like my zuchinni.

I hope you don't run into the same problems like you did with the roots on the other.

I don't think I will because they have so much more room and there is already an overflow built into each barrel. I only have 4 plants in each 1/2 barrel and the roots really have no restrictions because the drain is covered from the roots with drain field pipe and it runs the whole length of the barrel. In the other system there are 7 or 8 tomato plants and 3 sugar pea plants in a 10 foot section of 4" pipe.

This is so my favorite system, almost no maintenance on it except for pollinating and picking the veggies and fruit. I think my 1st cantalope is almost ready to pick, maybe another week as it is starting to change from green to the yellow tan color. I have been thinking non-stop on how to imporve this system for my needs and I think I am going to turn the barrels end to end next time for better access and run them the whole lengh of the green house in rows. I am short and do not have much reach so I think that will work better for me. I think one row for each nute similur plant so each row will have a nute tank specifically formulated for those plants. I still plan on doing lettuce vertically in the pipes and I want to try herbs, stawberries, corn and some root plants like onions and potatos (crazy since I can throw a rock and hit potato fields) but I want to try them.

There is nothing wrong with growing what is available near by. If nothing else it is a learning experience to let you know how it should you need to do it later.

I guess you'll be looking up some melon recipes, I've been meaning to try and make a melon sherbet myself.

It's kinda funny, but I'm alergic to melons but my son loves them and I have a huge family that eats it almost daily. My niece and nefew must think it is candy because they will eat melon before a sweet treat. They are 5 and 2 and will eat a whole canalope a day.

It's been a couple of weeks since I last updated. It's been really hot here this last week and I was away at fair so they had minimal care in the really hot weather. The plants are showing some shock but especially the zuchinni as they were sitting in water all week due to a root clog in the drain. It' cleared now, but the leaves turned pale and there are white spots on the main branch? coming out of the net pot. Added some bleech to kill whatever that is and they seem to be doing better. The cantalope are still growing like crazy. I haven't pollinated anymore in the last week and I can see the little dead ones that I missed. There are at least 20 that are golfball sized or larger. The very first one looks about ready to pick, just waiting for it to soften a bit on the bottom end then I will pick it.

Good luck! I've had a lot of fun with these first systems and I have learned soooo much.

So I pulled the zuchinni today, it was nasty. The cantalope are still doing good and I picked the first one today. Others are getting close, so we will see if they make it.

Cantalope are still growing strong, but it's time to start winding down and cleaning up.

I would love to develop a garden as nice as this one day. It is unfortunate that it is so hot down here in south Florida. I think that when I move my garden outside I am going to need an airconditioned greenhouse.

Great job fintuckyfarms!!
