Default Advice on a DIY setup

Hello everyone I'm new to the forum and I've always liked the idea of hydroponically growing plants but have never tried it. This season is slowly ending now but I want to make a DIY hydroponic system for tomatoes.

Now,I've read about different systems but I was wondering if something I came up with (but probably already exists and has a name) would work for tomatoes specifically(but I'd like to know if it would work for other veggies too),and it's basically a hybrid between "thin film" and "deep water culture". I've attached a poorly drawn sketch that should show what I'm talking about.

Any advice from more experienced folks is greatly appreciated!
