Default leeching the system

Question about leeching the system

I've read that periodically the system should be flushed to avoid salt buildup in the growing media. My tank has developed some sort of scum on the top surface of the nutrient, so I am going to clean it thoroughly tomorrow when I change the solution.

I want to flush the system over night using plain water and then refresh the nutrient again the next morning. Do you think it will hurt the plants to give them straight water for about a 9 hour period overnight? I mean that I will disconnect the timer and just run the pump for the 9 hour period, or should I just pull every other pin on the timer and give them the 30 mins. off/on cycle?

I pump nothing but fresh water through my systems for days sometimes to clean them. Regular watering cycle is fine.
