Depends on what you want to do.
Hydroponics will surpass Soil growing as for as the amount of product you get out of it.
Setup, you'll pay more to build a quick hydroponic system (pumps,parts,tank,etc) then going out and buying a pot and some soil, but, hydroponic plants grow faster, bigger, and produce more product if done correctly.
