$1 1935A HAWAII OVERPRINT WORLD WAR TWO EMERGENCY MONEY 70 PIECE LOT:
$1500.00

An interesting lot of desirable and popular notes. A large lot of 70 of these fantastic world war 2 relics is offered. These range from AG to Fine and these have issues, some minor, such as spots, stain, annotation, rust, tear, or tape and some have what I consider major problems. 34 pieces are from the SC block, 5 are YB blocks, 9 are from the CC block, 10 are from the LC block, 11 boast the PC block and a single example is ZB block. A thrilling and exhilarating epic dreamlot of historic implications.

After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 ,a date which will live in infamy, a major question was whether or not they would invade Hawaii sometime fairly soon afterwards. The U.S. government was concerned that American currency circulating in the Islands might fall into hostile hands and be used against the Allied Forces in the war effort.

So, in 1942 a special issue of currency was prepared by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, with a reddish-brown Treasury Seal (instead of the usual blue or green) and with HAWAII printed in small letters in two places on the front of the bill and in large letters on the back. These bills were then used in Hawaii for the duration of the war. If the Japanese had invaded, then all of this special Hawaiian-issue currency would have been demonetized and would not have been honored by the Treasury. As it turns out, the Japanese invasion of Hawaii never materialized, and this currency is still legal tender today, not to mention that it also a very interesting and popular collectible. We have acquired a group of the $1 notes of these fascinating Hawaii Overprint bills, inraw well used condition, which we are pleased to be able to offer here.
