IN-CIRCUIT CAPACITOR ESR METER1.What does “ESR” mean?An ideal capacitor only has capacitance properties. While a real capacitor can be viewed as a resistor connected with an ideal capacitor in series. Since this kind of resistor does not exist physically, we call it Equivalent series resistance or “ESR”. It mainly caused by Cap’s down-lead connection and electrolyte drying gradually. When a capacitor degrades its ESR value will go up.
2.Why use ESR Capacitor Meter？Many years in my repair career, I can not remember how many bad capacitors were detected by my ESR Meter in circuit. When I was frustrated with my defective appliance, it is very often the ESR Capacitor Meter that solved the problem at last. If a capacitor is open or shorted, it is easy to detect by using a Multimeter. But in the most cases, the capacitors are neither open nor shorted. They can almost keep as the same value as the good ones have, but they do not work in circuits anymore. In this case, it is very hard to find a bad capacitor with Multimeter or even a LCR meter. But if you use Capacitor ESR Meter, you will see significant changes for those bad capacitors which will tell no difference when you use other kind of meters.
3.How to use ESR Capacitor Meter ?Before testing, the capacitor should be discharged! Then shorted the two probes, turn the adjust knob to get zero reading. Our Meter is Non – polarity, you can touch capacitor two ends at will. The ESR value depends on the capacitor value and voltage rating. But generally speaking, if the “ESR” is less than one ohm, the Cap is good, if big than ten Ohms, the Cap is bad. We have detailed reference data chart in our instruction manual. And furthermore, you do not need to remove the capacitor from circuits. The reason for this function is that the output test signal of ESR meter is only 16mvp-p and it will not active any solid devices. In addition, the low ohm feature of ESR Meter can eliminate the effect caused by the components parallel with the capacitor under testing. And thanks for this feature that enables ESR Meter to be used in circuit.
