Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officers Samurai sword in Russo-Japaneseperiod Kyu Gunto mountings from World War 2. The blade represents theopportunity to own a historic Koto katanaby the Sue-Bizen School in rare KyuGunto mounts that include a desirable familymon on the handle. The blade and the mountings are in Very Good condition. The sword has a blade length of 26inches (66cm). The sword is well-constructed showing an itame hada. The hamon is a Bizen-style choji midare with small gunomemixed in. The hamon is present the length of the blade through the kissaki where it ends in a midare boshi.
The tang is mumei,or unsigned, and o-suriage, or shortenedwith three mekugi-ana pegholes. Basedon the length and shape, the sword looks to date to ca. 1500s and is likelyfrom the Sue-Bizen school, probably Sukesada. The Sue-Bizen school wasfamous for supplying many swords during the Sengoku period of warring states.
The mountings are Russo-Japanese period Kyu Gunto. The mountings are in Very Good condition. The tsukais saber-shaped and in Very Goodcondition. There are a few wire wraps loose and some of the same wrap is missing. There is a familymon of Meyui, or eyes, used by clanssuch as the Nomura. The saya(scabbard) is plated metal. It shows no dents but some oxidation and areas ofmissing finish along its length, retaining roughly 80-85% original finish. The blade is in Very Good condition. It shows a few small micro nicks alongits length. There are some small spots of rust, some small areas of staining,and some scratches along the blade. There are a few small lateral ware. The kissakialso looks to have seen previous polishes. There are no major flaws likehagire. Given the history and craftsmanship, I think this piece would be anoutstanding addition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
