Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. Theblade represents the opportunity to own a historic Koto katana, ca. 1300-1400s, that was originally a longer tachi. The blade is in Good condition and the mountingsare in Very Good condition. Thesword has a blade length of 27 inches (69cm). It shows a smaller ko-kissaki witha deeper curvature indicating it was at one time a tachi, or older long sword that predated the katana. The hada ismostly obscured but looks to be an itamehada. The hamon is mostly obscured but looks to be a ko-midare or narrow suguhathat runs very close to the blade. There looks to be a maru type ofboshi.

The tang is mumei,or unsigned and is o-suriage, or shortened. There are three mekugi-ana, or pegholes, in the tang indicating the sword wasremounted multiple times and likely of great age. Based on the shape andworkmanship, the sword is likely ca. 1300-1400s.

The mountings are Type 98 ShinGunto and in Very Goodcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is littleto no fraying. The tsuba is classic WW2 with four accompanying metal seppas. The saya (scabbard) is a black lacquered wood. It shows some splitting down theseams and is held together by some tape and paper. It retains roughly 75-80% original finish. The blade is inGood condition. It looks tohave been buffed or sharpened as there are significant scratches along theblade. There are no nicks but a few areas of rust. There are no major flawslike hagire. Given the age and history, I think this piece would be a niceaddition for a collector of WW2 militaria or Japanese swords.
