Authentic & Extremely Rare!

Antique Historical Civil War Confederate Saddle, M1859 McClellan Cavalry Copy. Ready For Display!

The Union Cavalry saddle was developed by Army Major General George B. McClellan & was adopted by the US War Department in 1859. It remained standard issue in various models for the remaining history of the mounted cavalry, which was dismounted in WWII (1940\'s). They were used by the cavalry in the Civil War, Indian Wars, WWI, & WWII, etc. It\'s still used today by ceremonial mounted units in the US Army.

The confederacy used a variety of saddles, including the Texas Hope & plantation saddles such as the; Somerset, Buena Vista, & Kentucky Rollback, etc. During the Civil War, the M1859 Cavalry saddles would often become the property of the Confederate Army. Either by being left behind on the battlefield, or by the capture or killing of a mounted US Union soldier. The CSA would remove the \"US\" labeled brass seat tag & replace it w/ a \"CS\" or \"CSA\" labeled brass or pewter tag. This was a common practice, & these saddles are referred to as being \"converted\". But the CSA also created their own version of the M1859, which is referred to as a \"CSA McClellan copy\" (these saddles are extremely rare). As you can see, there are no seat holes, this was standard issue on US Cavalry saddles. There\'s no brass tags, or evidence of there ever being any. Also, the skirts are attached w/ iron tacks, instead of brass screws. This particular saddle was created by the Confederacy (it\'s a \"copy\", not a \"conversion\"), which are more rare & more valuable.

Saddle is missing the stirrups, stirrup leathers, & has a small tear on the right skirt. Other than that, saddle is in excellent condition considering it was used on a battlefield in the 1860\'s. Has been cleaned & oiled. Decor or display only, in non-working condition. Not perfect, but still museum worthy. Great Civil War relic, wonderful historical militaria collectors item. Please check out our other items! Was $3495.95.
