15-p Minton & Boyle M&B Felspar Porcelain Tea Service:

You haven't seen any prettier fine china than this very early collection of Minton& Boyle, heavily hand painted, almost enameled, with oriental flowers and birds anda brilliant turquoise band over a white ground. This china is marked M&B, Felspar Porcelain and it was made between 1836 and 1841. This was a precursor to the later Minton china, the first name (Minton) referring to Thomas Minton.

This collection has survived many generations to be offered here. It includes 7 cups and 6 saucers and a large creamer and covered sugar bowl. The cups are 1-7/8" tall and 4" in diameter and are decorated inside and out. The saucers do not have a defined well. They are just a hair under 6" in diameter. The shapely creamer is 4" tall and 5-3/4" measured from handle to the wide spout. The sugar bowl is just under 6" tall with the lid in place and measures 6-1/4" from handle to handle.

The sugar bowl is the only piece in this collection with condition issues. It has a crack all around the base but is repaired and does not seem overly fragile for the difficulty. The lid is not perfectly round and has to be rotateda bit to fit squarelyon the rim of the bowl. These pieces were not mass-produced toexacting tolerances as modern china is, so this is expected. If you work with it a second, the lid fits properly. Otherwise it might rock a bit. There are no other cracks, no chips or repairs evident in the 15 pieces of this collection. The M&B mark is shown aboveand appears on the saucers, creamer and sugar bowl. The cups are blank except for the handpainted number 3084, in orange, painted on each piece and the lid.
