1787 Connecticut Cent, Miller 29.1-a.2 Extremely Rare, R6+ (218):
$576.00

1787 Connecticut Cent! Wow, Miller 29.1-a.2! R6+! Fine or slightly better, as usual with a weak central strike that seems often the case for the Large Letter types. A choice example of a VERY RARE VARIETY, and one that is seldom seen in ANY condition. Just FOUR sale appearances for the variety in the last SIXTEEN years. The Perkins coin sold in 2000 was graded AG on the obverse and Fine on the reverse and realized $1,380!The John Ford coin, sold five years later was a stronger Fine than this, but rough, and realized an amazing $2,990.Five years after that one appeared in the Eliasberg-Krause sale (Stack’s March, 2010), graded VG but probably closer to a full Fine grade and that one realized $1,610 after opening at just $100! This example appears to be missing from all but the most advanced collections, and on many want lists. Might be another five years before you get a chance at the variety.14 Day return privilege.Open to offers on all my coins!

Copper coins were struck in Connecticut beginning in 1785 and continuing through 1788. Connecticut coppers have the most complex minting history of allcolonial issues. There are more than 355 die combinations, with at least 126type varieties having 26 distinct bust styles made by at least six differentmints. The year 1787 has 241 varieties. Yet, the basic design of theConnecticut Coppers never changed; all issues imitated the British halfpenny! These were struck with primitive technology by people who didn\'t know what theywere doing, and thus they cannot be graded the same as products from a well‐run and experienced mint.Planchet flaws, weak strike, late die states and the like are the rule, not theexception. The most common Connecticut copper is 1000x rarer than a 1909-S V.D.B. cent and rarer than therarest Morgan Dollar!
