Offered is a great antique CHATAUQUA INDUSTRIAL ART DESK by POWERS, HIGLEY & COMPANY, CHICAGO, dated 1900. The desk is oak, which has been very nicely refinished, with the wood writing surface being maple, also nicely refinished. The cover/top lifts and swivels to expose a chalkboard (black missing from the lower portion), map (has damage to the edges, but in fairly good condition) of the United States with the inside (see first picture) having storage areas for pencils (spring holds them), etc. and a double wooden scroll with 26 lithograph prints, both color and black and white all dated 1895-1900 and in very good condition except for some rough edges at the beginning of the scroll. The scroll moves easily; however, one wood knob is missing from the upper right side. The drawings on the lower half below the scroll were done by my daughter for us for display but can be removed to expose the wood. There are small wires on either side of this desk which were installed by us for hanging purposes and can easily be removed.
The desk is patented Oct. 20, 1885, and Mar. 15, 1898, and copyright 1895 Powers Bros., 1898 Powers, Fowler and Lewis, 1900 Powers, Higley and Company. Overall, this desk is in very nice condition for a piece 110 years old. It measures approximately 21" wide, 20" high, and 3" deep. This would look great hanging in a classroom, den, or family room and shows many facets of life in 1900.
