1934 news poster: MICKEY MOUSE in Macy\'s Thanksgiving Parade Disney; balloon:
$49.95

1934 news poster:early Mickey Mouse! This is an “Illustrated Current News” poster, dated Nov. 7, 1934. It measures 12 x 19 inches in size. Printed on glossy paper, it has four thumbtack perforations in its left blank margin, but is otherwise in excellent condition, with two old fold lines, as originally issued. (These Illustrated Current News posters were published 3 times a week. They were folded into quarters when they were mailed to subscribers, which were typically stores or newsstands which tacked them up to be viewed by customers.)This rare poster shows a very early representation of Mickey Mouse, as a balloon creation for the annual Macy\'s Thanksgiving Parade, then in its 10th year. First created in 1928, Mickey looks somewhat different in this 1934 depiction than he appears in his more modern incarnations. The poster also has a second photo, presenting another children\'s creation which didn\'t achieve any lasting success. (Fred Temple was no Walt Disney!) (But maybe this helped spur the later creation of Jiminy Cricket by the Disney studio.)The poster\'s headline and caption explains both of them this way:NEW THRILLS FOR THE KIDDIES“Left — Los Angeles, Cal. — Mickey Mouse is going up. The world\'s most popular actor has been turned into a balloon 40 feet high and 23 feet wide for the Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. Right – Huge, music-minded insects are the unique creations of Fred W. Temple, Los Angeles engineer. Electrically controlled and animated, the six-foot grasshopper and the cricket shown above with their inventor go through wonderfully life-like motions.”The poster has the National Recovery Act eagle symbol in its bottom left corner, with the slogan, “NRA Member - U.S. - We Do Our Part.” The N.R.A. was a cornerstone of FDR’s New Deal policies which helped America recover from the Great Depression.**************
