1936 Carved Folk Art Wax Mummy Carnival Sideshow Circus Gaff Antique Vintage:
$1500.00

Found in a Philadelphia estate, fantastic carved wax or composite FORTEAN MUMMY with a fabulous expressive face and devil horns. Identified “Sideshow Gaff, made in 1936 by ESCO Wilson for the Baily Bros. Circus sideshow Annex No 8 of 14. Fortean Mummy from the collection of E. Howard.” I can find no information online.

Because he was designed to fake a 2,000 year old thing in the first place, its so difficult to truly date him. We can believe the paper attached, which is nicely worn with alligatored/separated glue holding it affixed. If so, c1936. Or a dime museum later chose to give him more provenance. I can’t be certain.

I will list my observations and include many detail shots. The construction of the case seems right for 1930s, blunt ends joined crudely. The paper label seems correct (dyed at the time to look like parchment), the velvet is circa 1900-20 in my opinion, the glass is THICK with crudely cut edges and shows hazing / spotting throughout. He hangs from a nail and wire construct that shows surface rust. There are two little brushes of green paint or mildew near one shoulder that I can’t explain, but otherwise it seems to add up as c1930s.

Measures 16” high, and case measures 7 x 11 x 22” high. Mummy is scaled to bump his shoulders into glass, feet onto the base so that it cannot move or swing. The case does not open and because of that cannot be appropriately wrapped for shipment. Has to be a pick up only piece, with a possibility of delivery / meeting in PA, VA, OH or as close to NY as the border of Eastern PA.

Please see photos and email with questions. Thanks much for looking.
