Barney Tobey(American, 1906-1989)
One of America\'s most prolific gag cartoonists, Tobey produced over 1,200 New Yorker cartoons and four New Yorker covers during his decades-long career. His works were exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the Grolier Society, and Princeton University. His book, B. Tobey of the New Yorker, was published in 1983. In addition, he illustrated several children\'s books, theater posters, and book covers. During Tobey\'s 1976 one-man exhibit at the Nicholls Gallery, New York Times art critic John Russell commented, \"With some cartoonists, the caption helps the drawing along. With others, the drawing raises hopes which the caption doesn\'t fulfill. With Tobey, the two are in perfect equilibrium.\"
