This is a clean and correct Buescher 400 “Top-Hat & Cane” tenor saxophone,
Manufactured in 1951, it has made it amazingly unscathed over its 64 years, a true time capsule!“Top-Hat & Cane” refers to the bell engraving of a gentleman\'s top-hat, cane and gloves. Tres sophistique. The bell of the horn features:
- A raised nickel silver “Buescher 400” logo
- An engraving of a castle on a seaside cliff.
- And ornate floral patterns on the bell and bow.
The engraving is pushes the boundary between craftsmanship and art to the vanishing point. The Buescher 400 has some unique features.
The neck octave key is underslung and the neck brace is one-of-a-kind.
This horn has all the original gold-plated, screw-in Norton Springs which screw into the posts instead of the standard press-fitted arrangement.
All the original amber-colored rollers are intact.
All the pads have their original Snap-on metal resonators, all intact. The octave vent pads are too small for resonators.
The low B and Bb bell keys are uniquely on the back of the bell, facing the player. They are thus protected by the main body of the horn, eliminating the need for a keyguard.
Beneath the rim of the bell is a nickel silver “tone ring”.
The key shafts, strap ring, left- and right-hand thumb rests and the tone ring under the bell rim are nickel silver, adding rigidity increasing resistance to wear and giving the horn a nice two-tone contrast to the lacquered brass. This is an original lacquer horn with the lacquer coverage well over 99%.
There is some spotting of the lacquer
The engraving is crisp and sharp! This horn has older original pads which are in very good condition, 4 have been replaced The body and keys are straight and true. The horn plays top to bottom.
