Super rare 1960 pattern DPM combat smock and trousers. This was the first camouflagedclothing on general issue to the British Army. (The Denisonwas specialised issue to airborne soldiers and, in the case of the WW2 windys, winter issue only in WW2 and SF issue post-war ).
Thispattern was only issued for about a year and then only to troops deploying in Northern Ireland. It was the 1960 patt olive green suit but made in the then new Disruptive Pattern Material of a lovely, soft, hardwearing 100% cotton modal. Same in every detail to theolive greensmocks; stitching around collar, oval elbow reinforcements, half zipper, 'grenade' pockets with elastic. It was very soon replaced by the '68 pattern suit. Jackets do come up from time to time but always in a size 1 - small.short. This smockis in a large reg size 6. I have never in 30+ years seen another size 6 smock. I mean NEVER. This collectible smock could also be worn if you are a renactor of early NI / late 60's / early 70's British Army.
The colours are true. It is wash faded as mentioned but a look at where the jacket was unpicked on the back on pic 7 will show you the original colour. This is different to most 60 patt DPM colouring which are more vibrant greens and browns. This smock is the same colouring as an early trial smock i once had that was a a Denison in cut but with an internal, press studdedmonkey tail and attached hood. The fact that the label is so legible tells you it hasn't been heavily washed or the label would be illegible. The modal cotton is also very soft and pliable.
Condition of is good with wash fading for a 40 year old used smock. Jacket has no fraying but the bits on the back that were tucked in for a more fitted fit have been unpicked and the liner has been cut in the middle. There is light wear to the cuffs. STUDY THE PHOTOS.However, if you are some an***ly retentive collector with 5 of these already and looking to win this as the crown jewel of your collection, please move along. This is a good, rare and honest smock but not a mint one. This was worn and has been there and done that - unlike many collectors !
