1966 Sears Equatorial Refractor 60mm 450X Telescope #4-6333 Fine Wood Crate A++:
$235.95

OUTSTANDING/BEYOND EXC-- That is based on the condition of the pieces in their crate as most are in their original plastic. The telescope was not assembled, but a local buyer is free to do so before buying as I did not want to mess it up trying to do so as it is a pretty extensive parts list. Stored since the early 70s, this is the REAL DEAL of refractor telescopes from the end of the Sears era in America. That was pre-Internet, pre-shopping mall days when Sears cataloged EVERYTHING! Generators, clothes, tractors, telescopes, firearms, toys......This was made in Japan, where the finest optics and cameras were from beginning in that era as well. The US made lenses and cameras were the finest for decades, but in the 60s, Japan emerged as a car manufacturer with Datsun and Toyota and Honda and also a camera manufacturer. It took a while for US buyers to accept Japanese items as equal or finer quality, but look where we are now. Sears labeled their products for sale in America. This is a very large and heavy wooden crate, OVER 3 FEET WIDE and weighs a LOT with hinges and the case alone would cost you this much to buy today. This is no simple storage crate as it is made like a piece of fine furniture. Look at the edges and you see finger-groove construction and metal corner caps. Seriously, this crate alone is worth a couple hundred. This was not made by robotic machines, and these days, it would be injection molded plastic. Opening the top, you see a packing list (see photos) on the top lid, an instruction and specification booklet and the tripod and scope with 3 eyepieces and Barlow lens....as far as I can tell, it is ALL there. The last one of these I saw sell for $335 in 2009 and that one had some issues and scratches and dents. Most others that have sold in recent years were missing parts like the Barlow finder scope or eyepieces, but this one seems to be complete. At least I know for sure that all of the necessary parts, and ones others are looking to buy, are all here. This is the same light blue that most 60s Sears telescopes had and though various models came with a wooden tripod, this deluxe model had a fully metal tripod. It has the mount (theres a mount selling on for $50...just the piece joining the tripod to the scope is $50 and theres a guy in an astronomy forum looking for the Barlow or finder scope who will pay $100 to complete his) and all sorts of pieces, almost all in their original plastic wrap.
Visit the online astronomy forums and you will see these telescopes mentioned with reverence. Many astronomists desire the 60mm vintage Sears Discoverer scopes as the long 900mm focal length and superb lenses provide awesome color and clarity and can top many modern scopes. The No. 4 6333 is the model to get
If you collect telescopes, you MUST have one of these, and if you are looking for a unique gift....for the person who has the space to setup and display this, it is amazing in a man-cave or den that has vintage items. Of course, if you need a gift for anyone into astronomy, this is THE gift, as anyone can buy a new Tasco or drop more than this for the stubby Celestrons and though new ones come with digital this/that and can be controlled by apps on your phone.....when it comes to long distance (millions of miles) viewing, length and lenses are what matter and this has both.
Though half a century old, this can truly list as LIKE NEW as it is that nice.
As I know little about these, any interested buyer can examine it and make sure all pieces are there, though all the main ones are there for sure. Even the smaller ones that I checked, but I did not do a complete count. I am 99.99% sure it is complete as someone loved this and cared for it as they stored it properly.
A true piece of telescope history and an amazing example of quality manufacturing. I cant get over that crate as I know what it costs to make one today
I am listing this as a local pickup, but if anyone is okay with paying to ship it, it is already crated and just needs to be boxed around the wood. I will ship the lowest price and this would be a great item to ship on a Greyhound bus or Amtrak train as it should be less than USPS or Fedex and faster.
