Jesus Christ (6 BC - 30 AD) Jesus (also called Christ which means king or Messiah) was born in Israel 2000 years ago. Modern civilization marks his birth by dividing time B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini - or the year of our Lord) . During this time, all of Israel was under Caesar's Roman dictatorship including Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, and Nazareth, where he was raised. In his thirties, Jesus began his public teaching and display of recorded miracles. Over a three year period, despite his efforts to keep a low profile, Jesus' reputation spread nationwide. Because of this reputation and supposed violation of religious laws (Jesus' claim to be God) the religious leaders had the Roman government (Pontius Pilate) execute him on the Cross. As documented by history more than 500 witnesses saw Jesus return from the dead three days later, and over the next 40 days was seen in both the southern and northern provinces of Israel. To many, this was conclusive proof that Jesus' claims to be God were real. Within 100 years, people throughout the Roman empire (Asia Minor, Europe) became followers of Jesus. In 325AD, the following of Jesus, Christianity, became the official religion of the Roman Emperor Constantine.Within 500 years, even Greece's temples of Greek gods were transformed into churches for followers of Jesus. Although some of Jesus' messages and teachings were diluted or miscommunicated through the expansion of a religious institution, Jesus' original words and life still speak loudly for themselves.History behind the Ancient Bronze Prutah ("Widow's Mite")
These rare coins are bronze prutah of Alexander Jannaeus, of the Hasmonean Dynasty, King of Judaea, 103 - 76 B.C (Circulated between 103 BC and AD 20). Because these leptons, or prutah, were the lowest denomination coin that circulated in Jerusalem during Christ's lifetime, they are believed to be the coins referred to in the Biblical story of the "Poor Widow" which is referenced biblically in Mark 12:41-44:

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow put more into the treasury than all the others. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
