I wanted to power spray these and get the grease and grime off them before shooting new pics. They clean up very nice. There are no pits, gouges, nicks or scratches that penetrate the surface of the surface that the blade rides on.
These massive band wheels each measure 42\" x 4\" and weigh approximately 600- 800 pounds each.
They are perfectly true, perfectly smooth and perfectly balanced. Don\'t let the old paint fool you. These were manufactured around 1930, are extremely precision and would cost a FORTUNE to have made today.
Anyone in the saw-milling business knows of the huge demand for wide live edge slabs, of any species Well cut slabs are now bringing more money, per board foot / pbf, than finished dimensional lumber from the same log!
EASY MONEY cutting slabs! Most mills, even the big ones, can only cut live edge slabs around 24\"-30\". Logs exceeding 30\" can yield slabs that will easily bring twice as much pbf or more. I find that a 36\" to 48\"+ 10/4 slab will bring 3x - 5x as much money pbf as one that is 30\" or less. Imagine how much money you can make sawing slabs from logs that are too wide for your competitors! You can own your local market if you can mill the really big logs.
I built a slab saw from a pair of these wheels and set the wheels apart far enough I can mill a slab out of a log up to 84\" in diameter. I don\'t expect to run across any logs too big from now on.I power mine with a 40hp electric motor and run a 5\" caroffere blade and simply push the carriage through the log. The slabs come out so smooth and flat I don\'t even have to plane them or do much finish work at all! The biggest I\'ve cut was a hard, dry, black walnut log measuring 66\"- 70\" in diameter x 16.5 feet. Each slab quickly sold for more money than the car I drive is worth.
The drive wheel looks identical to the one shown, minus the arbor. The idler wheel, shown, has the arbor/axel, mounting plate and several adjustments including the ability to tension the blade.
