Free Enterprise II, and her green-and-white sister ships of the Townsend Car Ferries fleet, are a familiar sight at Dover
to the many thousands of motorists and their families bound for a holiday on the
Launched on January 29, 1965, the £1,800,000 Free Enterprise II entered cross-channel service four months later on
May 22. She was built in Holland at the Schiedam, Rotterdam, yard of Werf Gusto, part of the I.H.C. shipbuilding group,
and was specially designed by Townsend for the cross-channel short-sea
The 4,122 ton ship operates to France and Belgium throughout the year, and during the summer makes either four return
crossings between Dover and Calais or two return trips between Dover and Zeebrugge each
She carries 1,000 passengers and 205 cars, or a combination of cars, motorcycles, caravans, coaches and freight vehicles.
The ship is equipped with bow and stern doors so that vehicles can be driven on board and driven off again at Calais or
Zeebrugge through the bow door.
On board the three car decks are connected by a series of ramps so that a full load of cars can be driven off in about 10
minutes. The passenger accomodation is on an open plan basis with a restaurant, buffet and a wide selection of duty-free
bars and shops. .
Offered for sale here is this rare c1960's Airfix model kit of the Townsend Free Enterprise II ferryin1:600 scale.
Kit comes fully complete in its original box with all (bar the odd one or two) parts still attached to their sprues!
Also included in the box is a display stand,the original decal sheet, and fullbuilding instructions for the model kit itself.
Box is also in extremely good condition for over 40-years old.
Beautiful rare vintage kit for the collector and enthusiast alike - a lovely example indeed.
