'65 AMPEG Rocket 2 GS-12
This is a very clean 1965 AMPEG Rocket 2 GS-12This amp is in great condition cosmetically as well as electronically. The Blue Diamond tolex has been thoroughly cleaned but with some minor scrapes, as well as a extended solo cigarette burn on the top front edge. The faceplate has been polished though some etching and scratched still remain. The handle has been replaced with a new/old correct handle. The original grill cloth had a rip it in and has been expertly replaced with the AMPEG correct grill cloth.Electronically it has been completely restored: The 2-prong AC cable has been replaced with a 3-prong grounded power cable. All the electrolytic filters and tone caps, and any drifted resistors have been replaced. All the controls were cleaned and are noise-free. There is one new JJ-12AX7 input tube as well as a APEX matched set of JJ 7591 output tubes. The original AMPEG 7199 Phase inverter tube tests strong and still sounds great. The octal plugs have all been cleaned and re-tensioned and all of the solder joints have been re-flowed. The original output transformer was failing so a new Heyboer OT151A output tranny was sourced from Fliptops.com (an improved OT that was used in later models of this and the Reverb Rocket, Jets and Gemini 1 Amps). The original CTS 12” speaker has been replaced with a 80 watt Peavy Scorpion Speaker.
The amp has treble and bass tone controls, and that great sounding AMPEG tremolo controlled via speed and intensity knobs and turned off and on with the original rubber Daisy doorstop foot switch. It’s rated at 18 watts, but is more like 20 (especially with an efficient speaker). This amp is extremely quiet at Idle and It has great punch, woody, jazzy cleans at low volumes, but when overdriven (just past 9:00 on the dial) compresses strongly into powerful blues and classic rock sounds that features a lot of touch - you can control that overdrive with your guitar volume and playing style. The tremolo is strong and sounds great and the tremolo speed control also has a "click stop" that activates a repeat percussion feature and turns the volume completely on and off rather than just modulating it up and down when activated. A very different unique sound.. The amp works well with pedals and it’s a classic time-machine.
