Antique 1855 Civil War Model 1840 Musicians & Drummers Sword Ames MFG A.D.K
I am pleased to offer this Antique c. 1855 Civil War era Model 1840 Musicians & Drummers Sword! This relic of theAmerican Civil War is the model 1840, and was regulation for bandsmen in full-dress, however they may have been more important for fifers and drummers who would actually end up in battle.
Markings on the swordinclude US, an 1855 date-of-manufacture, and A.D.K., initials of wartime government inspector A. D. King, the Ames MFG Chicopee Mass mark, and theinitials R.H.K.W. on theknucklebow (Robert Henry Kirkland Whiteley, another inspector).
Themarkings, particularly the A.D.K and the date, are fadedand require magnification and/or angling of light reflectionto make out.
The blade has a dark patina throughout, and some pits along theedge. The hilt shows heavy scratching and uneven patina to the brass. The grip and the bottom of the knucklebow are a bit loose as well.
