This is a sculptural Victorian Era Umbrella Swift Yarn Winder witha turned wood base on bun feet. It has abrass upright center support bar, brass fitting and thumb screw that hold theexpansion ring to adjust the height and width of the slats. There’s wonderful detailing around the finialwith a series of round balls circling the top.
When I got this nearly 20 years ago, I was told that it wasEnglish in origin, though I’m not sure. Iwas also told that it was from the late 1800s, which is probably correct.
It measures approximately 26” tall, 9” in diameter across the baseand the slats are 15” long.
A couple of the slats are split where they meet the centerupright (see photos), though I’ve always tied them back in so that the swift isusable. You can’t really tell when it’son display, though it probably would be a relatively simple repair if youwanted to stabilize it even more. Despiteit all, this yarn winder is in wonderful condition for its age and displaysbeautifully.I always thought it looked like a piece of sculpture!
