Antique BURLEY-WINTERStoneware Blue & White BUTTER CROCK, Crooksville, Ohio

Up for sale is an antiqueBURLEY-WINTER stoneware butter crock. Thecrock is signed on the bottom: Burley-Winter Pot\'y Co., Crooksville, Ohio. The pattern on the diffused blue and white crockmay be what is called Reverse Pyramids & Columns, this is an uncommon patternthat is rare to find. The crock is 5 3/4\" across the top (bowl walls areabout 3/8” thick) and about 3 3/4\" high.It weighs over 2 pounds and to the very top of the crock it holds 32liquid ounces or about 2 pounds of butter.

This antique Burley-Winterstoneware crock is in very good condition. All salt glazed utilitarian ware from this period was made in massivequantities, without regard to perfection. Pieces have manufacture dings, blisters, crazing and uneven edges under the glaze. This in no way detractsfrom the value. This butter crock isperfect on the inside but it has some manufacture flaws and 3 small dings onthe outside. On the lower-base edgethere is a 3/4\" chip. On oppositesides of the upper band there is a decorative circle with a dimple in thecenter but no holes for a bail handle. Please check all the photos before offerding. If you have questions please email me through.

This diffused blue and whiteReverse Pyramids & Columns crock is a rare and wonderful piece for anycollector of blue stoneware. “Burley-Winterstoneware is usually very difficult to find and can be quite costly. However, once you purchase your first piece of this great pottery, you will fall in lovewith it. Every piece is unique in its glaze and it is heavy, durable andbeautiful. It also fits in with modern and arts & crafts décor.” (More Than McCoy-online store)

The Burley and WinterPottery Co., aka, Burley Winter or BW, was a great American pottery companylocated in Crooksville, Ohio. BW started its business in 1872 and it lasted untilthe mid 1930’s. Like many American pottery companies no longer in business,BW’s early items included functional stoneware utility vessels, such as thundermugs, (aka chamber pots), slop buckets, tankards, cuspidors poultry fountains,(aka chick feeders), pitchers and bowls, jugs, and crocks. Many early BW pottery pieces have a heartsymbol and embossed name on the bottom. Many BW pieces have an incised BurleyWinter name and mold number on the bottom, and some BW pottery have no mark.
