An antique French Dragoon helmet with Medusa head comb and horse hair plume. This helmet is fresh out of a local estate military collection. Unfortunately, we don’t know the specifics of this particular helmet. The only things we are certain of is that it is authentic French military and that it is at least 100 years old. The French military used similar helmets from Napoleonic times all the way through early WWI. The only markings we could find were under the round portion of the chin straps that screw to the helmet. They are stamped “ALEXIS GODILLOT BREVETTE S.C.D.G”. The helmet is remarkably large and has overall dimensions of 12 ½” long x 9 ¼” wide x 8 ¾” tall, not including the horsehair plume. The helmet is in good antique condition with minor imperfections. There are some dings and bends in the brass comb and the helmet itself. One of the metal/leather chin straps is broken but appears as though it could be repaired. Some minor adjustments to the metal hardware and a chin strap repair would really improve the presentation quality of this piece. We are selling it as-is / as-found. With the exception of the pins that hold the lobster claw chin strap together, all the metal parts of this helmet appear to be made of brass. The horsehair plume is remarkably well intact and hangs another 20” or so below the rim of the helmet. An interesting and hard to find antique French helmet.
