Axle Spindle Cart Railroad Antique Iron Steel Antique Coal Cart Axle Hub Spindle
Hand-Wrought Blacksmith-Made
28-1/2" Length End to End
Quite Possibly From the 1800\'s
Excellent Condition - Some Rust & Pitting
Made Of Quality Steel
Was Used On Small Gauge Train Track
Possibly Used On Small Private Farm Coal Mine Seam These are well-made pieces and are stout and quite heavy at 15 pounds a piece. They measure 28-1/2" end to end. 18-3/4" distance between the inside of the hubs (the wider round part). From center of the two bolt holes from one another is 15-1/2". The holes themselves are 3/4". These show all tell-tale signs of being made by a blacksmith. Notice the fold seams at the center of both square axles. These could have been small town or farm made. A lot of homesteads throughout the country had their own private coal mine which the family worked for several years. These could be turned into coffee table wheels and the spindles can be ground a little bit and bushings can be fitted for a wheel to be retrofitted. Here is a snapshot of one of the small train wheels laying with these pieces. It is a broken wheel and does not come with this sale, but is only as a reference. There are other types of wheels that can be incorporated with these axles if so desired. The thickest part of the spindle is 1-1/4" in diameter. In the photo below, you can see iron fold marks. Notice the swelling of the steel around the hole and some divots on the side which indicate that the holes were punched through while the steel was cherry hot and then most likely reamed to precision fit after the piece was cooled. I am not sure what the rectangular shaped divots are there for. The ends of the spindles have holes drilled through in a criss-cross fashion to hold a washer via cotter pins. I have removed most of the loose scale and most of the rust. What is left is some pitting and a little roughness. Then I thoroughly oiled the whole piece with machine oil and wiped the residual oil off. This helps to preserve it and helps to show more character. If the buyer wants to smooth the surfaces more, then they can go over the pieces with a few grits of sandpaper to give it a smoother effect, most particularly to the feel of it by hand. Total weight of these pieces is 30 pounds and they will be well-protected in shipping. These are extremely well one-of-a-kind pieces. I seriously doubt you will ever find ones just like them. These would make great old-time decor conversation pieces, movie and film photo props. See our other sales, featuring antiques and vintage items while you are here.
