In the year 1622, the Carmelite Order\'s “Mother-house” inSpain sent to Convents all over the world this medal (minted in ROME), to commemoratethe Canonization of Teresa of Avila; a Catholic Mystic, and a legendary reformerof her Order, later known as the Discalced Carmelite Order.
Here on consignment for sale from the EstateCollection of Bertha (the founder of Church Woman Antiques), is one of thosemedals from her collection. Bertha passed away in her sleep on October 20th2010, at age 97.
This medal is 2 inches long, and weighs 28 grams ofbronze. Bertha’s collection was acquired over her 80 years of collecting; some camefrom convents, others from estate collections, while a few are said tohave come from Spanish Shipwrecks whose location has been lost to history.
The medals in our sales have been inspected byreputable numismatic dealers, and their dating can be confirmed on pages 2& 3 of the book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, andpublished by NUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.
