The Pittsburgh Pottery Co., Inc. opened its doors in1913. The first director Fred W. Maxwell of Texas USA manufactured thisearly period rare clay pot. Initially, this pottery manufacturer ran intodifficulty because he was unable to temper the clay so it would not crackduring the curing/drying process. The company later discovered theconstruction of the kiln created the cracks in the clay or mud. In 1918,the plant closed for three years while the new kiln was rebuilt. Onlythree pottery plants exist in the USA and most of the high quality clay stillcomes from southPittsburghtoday

Thisstoneware crock is well preserved, and the glossy outside/inside finish isbrilliant with minimal wear from age (see images). This crock shows somemarks and light scratches but overall it is in good condition. This veryearly Diamond Brand crock has cracks on its bottom due to the condition of theclay and the faulty kiln used when it was fired. This piece is completelyoriginal and in great condition and has many highly sought after features
