Very old thorn walking stick with 14k gold and sterling fittings. Measures 35 1/5 inches from tip to top of the handle. This cane came from the estate of my great Aunt who died over 20 years ago at 91 years old. She stated that the cane was her grandfathers who died in 1912 at 89 years old. He was a farmer and former Confederate army veteran who was wounded several times during the war. My Aunt told me that it was common in those days for former Confederate soldiers that suffered a wound to carry such a stick and often personalize them. I do not know exactly how old it is but, for what it is worth, that is what I was told about it and it certainly appears over 100 years old. I took one of the gold fittings loose to test the metal and it does test 14k. Unfortunately one of the small silver brads broke in the process. The head is intact but the nail part broke. The part will be included and it seems easy to fix. There is a small crack 6 inches from the tip that also seems like an easy fix. The cap on the handle is sterling silver and the cap on the end of the stick appears to be iron with a silver band. Fine old stick from an old Southern estate. FREE shipping anywhere in the USA.
