ANTIQUE US Civil War Model 1860 CAVALRY SWORD & SCABBARD, AMES marked & dated:
$482.00

This sale is for a US Civil War sword/saber by maker Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames is the Colt of Civil War sword makers. Collectors say if you want only one civil war pistol, buy a Colt Navy.  The Colt Navy was used by both the North and South which makes for a perfect icon of the War.

When it comes to wanting a Civil War blade, buy an Ames model 1860 cavalry sword/saber.

This particular example is in solid, used condition. The markings on the ricasso are:

AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS on one side

US / DR / 186...? on the other, the date was weakly stamped at the end, as was often the case. However, definitely Civil War. Early 1860\'s

Measurements:

42 1/2\" inches overall in scabbard

34 1/2\" inches (blade end-to-end)

The hand guard remains tight and secure with NO movement at all. Great patina, excellent original condition.

What\'s really neat is the underside of the hand guard reveals the initials \"AG\".  This was done crudely by hand one dot at a time.  I\'m guessing most likely by a soldier??..

The metal scabbard is in very good condition with no major dents or bends anywhere. It fits the blade like a glove and doesn\'t rattle a bit.  In fact, There really isn\'t any loss of its black outer protective coating.  Which is seldom the case.  It sure looks to be the original coating to me but i am not an expert so can\'t say for sure.  Please look at pics and you be the judge.

The leather wrapped handle is still very much in tact and not brittle.  But please know, as you can see in the photo\'s, the wire cord is long gone.

Overall, this is a wonderful blade that has been pretty much left untouched.  The blade itself definitely has not been sharpened which is a good thing.  I would also like to note that 95% of the blade has not been improperly cleaned or stripped of any original patina. However, at some point there was removal of most likely rust on the Ricasso to reveal the \"marks\" on each side because Light sanding marks can be seen.

Best of luck to those who offer and be sure to read the terms & conditions of the sale listed below before offerding.\'
