Antique Women\'s Burial Shoes

 

These were purchased from an estate sale of a funeral that had been in the same family for years.  The old stone basement was full of old funeral supplies.  Based on the other items that were there, I believe that these are from the late 1800\'s.

White leather burial slippers with leather soles.  They have  white grosgrain ribbon scalloped edge bows.  They are lined with cloth.  One shoe has a broken piece of very fragile ribbon sewn on the inside, I think they originally had ribbon to tie them on but broke off from handling. No markings anywhere.  They are extremely narrow - a little over 9 1/2\" long, only 2 3/8\" wide at the widest part of the sole.  Each one has a small thumbtack size hole (not very deep) on the soles at the heel and toe, not sure what the purpose was.  The edges are slightly darkened and there are a few small spots but the leather is soft and pliable.
