Antique Mortician\'s Body Carrier, Cooling Basket, Removal Basket.
It was used to carry a body from the home, or place of death, to the mortuary.
Unknown date, but probably from the late 1800\'s or early 1900\'s.
Made by Undertaker\'s Supply Co. Chicago IL.
Very good condition.
I think it is made primarily from rattan core, woven into a basket.
The bottom is a single, large slab of wood, probably white pine.
Overall dimensions are about 82\" long (interior length is about 76\"), maximum width is about 22\", and maximum height about 18\".
It is sitting on stools in some of the photos, it does not have legs.
Rare find from my attic, where it has spent the last 45 years.
Time for a new home! To my knowledge, it is unhaunted.
It is said that from the use of these carriers, the phrase \"basket case\" came into use.
