Apollo Soyuz Link – Up
July 17, 1975
Kennedy Space Center, Florida 32815(See matching cover also current listed from Houston, Texas)
The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) (Russian: Экспериментальный полёт «Союз» — «Аполлон», Eksperimantalniy polyot Soyuz-Apollon, lit. \"Experimental flight Soyuz-Apollo\"), in July 1975, was the first joint U.S.–Soviet space flight, and the last flight of an Apollo spacecraft. Its primary purpose was as a symbol of the policy of détente that the two superpowers were pursuing at the time, and marked the end of the Space Race between them that began in 1957.

The mission included both joint and separate scientific experiments (including an engineered eclipse of the Sun by Apollo to allow Soyuz to take photographs of the solar corona), and provided useful engineering experience for future joint US–Russian space flights, such as the Shuttle–Mir Program and the International Space Station.

ASTP was the last manned US space mission until the first Space Shuttle flight in April 1981. It was also U.S. astronaut Donald \"Deke\" Slayton\'s only space flight. He was chosen as one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts in April 1959, but had been grounded until 1972 for medical reasons. Please view the photos to determine the appearance and quality of the cancellation.
Stamp is a USA Scott # 1565, 10¢, Continental Army - Solider with Flintlock Musket, Uniform Button, issued July 4, 1975, as one of four stamps in the Military Uniforms group, for the bicentenary of the U.S. Military Services. The Continental Army, Continental Navy, Continental Marines, and American Militia.I personally obtained this event cover over 35 years ago and have been the only owner. This event cover has a penciled address (front side) and servicing post office return address (backside).
Envelope details:
Envelope is white, size #6 ¾ (3⅝” x 6 ½”, 3.625” x 6.5”, 92.1mm x 165.1mm)
Commercial style, gummed seam overlaps. Gummed “mint” seal flap.
Seam overlaps will normally have slight bleed through on backside due to the age of the envelope. The postal cover was sent in to the post office with the seal flap tucked in side with a card stiffener. When received back the card stiffener was removed and the seal flap pulled out of the envelope. The gum on the seal flap is “mint” and does not show any bleed through since the gum was never activated. The cover has always been stored in low humidity in an archival sleeve.
Some backside postal markings will not be completely visible unless the seal flap is tucked back into the envelope since this is the way the cover was processed. Please look to see what other postal covers and items I am currently listing you might be interested in!sale Photos: The sale photos are of the exact item(s) being sold in this sale.
