Ashton Drake 1995 Vinyl 151/2\" Gene Doll as Red Venus Created By Mel Odom:

<img is a new 15 1/2\" vinyl doll \"Red Venus\" by the Ashton Drake Company who had stopped production of Gene Dolls in 2004.  This doll was made in 1995. This is one of the first three Gene Dolls produced in their first year....their names were Red Venus, Monaco, and Premiere.  This is why this is priced higher than the others in the collection. It has never been out of the box so I have limited photos.  It was stored in an even temperatured, smoke-free warehouse.

The Gene doll debuted at Toy Fair in February of 1995. The immediate response by collectors was a positive one, with many rejoicing at a new doll finally breaking a decades-old monopoly on the fashion doll world. Raoffer on-line attention to Gene convinced Ashton-Drake, the original manufacturers, to continue and expand the line. Gene’s philosophy of hands-on play and ‘out-of-the-box’, personalized collecting and became the incentive for countless doll lovers. A vast cottage industry of private designers, at every level of accomplishment, made and traded in, among other things, meticulously sewn, miniature, twentieth century dress. The story-driven dolls and separate fashions became a standard within the doll world with numerous like-sized fashion dolls from other companies following. At the same time, new dolls within the Gene line were being introduced, first as characters in the 2000 book \"Gene Marshall, Girl Star\", and then as dolls from Ashton-Drake.

Material and Characteristics of Gene Marshall Dolls:

Gene dolls are made from hard vinyl that has a porcelain-like feel. The early dolls only have joints at the neck, shoulders and hips. Later dolls also have knee, elbow and waist joints for better posablility. Gene dolls have painted eyes and applied eyelashes, and rooted hair.

Companies That Have Produced Gene Marshall Dolls:

Artist and illustrator Mel Odom designed and created the Gene doll for Ashton Drake Galleries. The dolls are currently produced by Integrity Toys.
