The Automatic Electric Co \"GTE\" was a major manufacture of telephones and central office equipment.They were noted for top quality and innovation. AE was a major supplier to the US Navy. EARLY TALL SOLID BRASS CRADLES WERE FOUND ONLY ON EARLY PRODUCTION OF THE TYPEA DESK PHONES. LATER ONES WERE BAKELITE OR ZINC. THEY WERE SOON REPLACED WITHSHORT CRADLES MADE OF BAKELITE. THE TALL BRASS CRADLES ARE VERY HARD TO FIND ANDQUITE EXPENSIVE. STROWGER on the dial refers to Dr Strowger, an undertaker and inventor during the late 1800, who learned that operators were referring customers to his competition He invented the famous step switch which made dialing practical and very successful. It revolutionized the industry. The Automatic Electric Co acquired the rights and produced the first and most acceptable dialing system. Subsets were required for early desk phones to house large components such as ringers, induction coils and capacitors. They were usually mounted on the wall near the telephone. There is plenty of cord so it can be placed
