Matchlessantiques offers collectors, smiths this Beautiful 200 lb. Hay Budden Blacksmith anvil. This Hay Budden would be an excellent anvil in any blacksmith shop. This anvil has clean smooth flat face. The rebound is excellent, just like you'd expect from a Hay Budden. On one side the edge is excellent and on the working side the edge is rounded some from use. Thetrademark is only partly readable and the serial numbers are gone. You can just make out the weight mark, which reads "200". We do know that since it does have a face plate, it would have been made prior to 1908. This anvil resembles a plateless Hay Budden more than one made with a plate. I think this anvil was made right around the transition between the two styles and the look of the anvil started to change. The horns became thicker and appeared to look more "turned up" and the tables became smaller giving more working area on the horn. If you've been looking for a good sized quality anvil you won't want to miss this one. This size and make of anvil are getting hard to find in this condition. Please take a close look at the pictures.
NOTE: This sale is for the 200 lb. HAY BUDDEN ONLY. The other anvils and tools shown ARE NOT INCLUDED, but may be offered in other sales.
According to Richard Postman's book "Anvils in America" this Solid Wrought Iron anvil was the first style anvil they made and is considered the most attractive style produced. It has a shorter waist and doesn't look as top heavy as later styles. This anvil was made from the best American Wrought Iron and faced with the best Crucible Cast Steel plate. Postman's book also states that Hay Buddens were considered the best American made anvil. Hay Budden claims they used the best material available and were produced by the finest American craftsmen. It is still considered the Rolls Royce of blacksmith anvils and is one of the most sought after anvils today.

NEW DETAILS: IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED TO ME THAT THIS ANVIL MAY HAVE HAD SOME REPAIRS TO THE EDGES A LONG TIME AGO. I AM NOT POSITIVE, BUT I DO BELIEVE THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THERE HAS BEEN SOME REPAIR AT SOME TIME. SINCE THIS POSSIBLEWORK APPEARS TOBEAGED AND HAS HELD UP WELL, I THINK IT SHOULD CONTINUE TO HOLD UP WELL. I WILL STAND BEHIND ANY PROBLEMS IF THEY WOULD OCCUR. THANKS
