Bashlow Restrike 1861 Confederate Cent Defaced Dies Civil War Token Full Red - BINo

A very interesting history behind these restrikes. They were made in 1961 by Robert Bashlow, who used the original died made by engraver Robert Lovett. Lovett cancelled (defaced) the dies due to fear of being charged with treason for aiding the Confederacy. The hammer blows and chisel marks he made on the dies are clearly visible in these restrikes.

After minting the restrikes, the dies were donated to the Smithsonian, were they still remain today.

This coin is made from copper and measures approximately 19mm in diameter and is twice the thickness of a regular penny.

This coin is in excellent condition, no wear, with a brilliant copper tone and lots of original lustre. Very attractive. May have a few tiny spots.
