MARC A. MITSCHER COMMEMORATIVE BRONZE PLAQUE

MarcAndrew \"Pete\" Mitscher (January 26, 1887 – February 3, 1947)was a pioneer in naval aviation who became an admiral inthe United States Navy, andserved as commander of the Fast Carrier TaskForce in the Pacific during the latter half of World War II. At the close of WWII he was described as the“…preeminent carrier force commander in the world,” and worked hard to assurethe survival of Naval aviation.Extensive further information available at [link removed by ].

Plaque is richly relieved, in excellent condition, andportrays Admiral Mitscher in his traditional working cap aboard ship during WWII. Plaque has a felt pad on reverse.

“DL 2” around bottom of plaque indicates type of ship“Destroyer Leader”, named in memory of Admiral Mitscher. According toWikipedia, “Two ships of the Navy have been named USS Mitscher in his honor: [including] the post-World War II frigate, USSMitscher(DL-2),later re-designated as the guided-missile destroyer (DDG-35),...” She wasdecommissioned in 1978 and sold for scrap in 1980. This plaque might be struckfrom that scrap.

THREE COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUES: “OLD IRONSIDES”

Two plate-type bronze plaques and one plaque mounted in thecenter of a bronze ship’s steering wheel, all three depict the firstcommissioned US Navy ship U.S.S. Constitution otherwise known as “OldIronsides”, in full sail on a wave-ridden sea. Beneath the image are the wordsin raised letters: “Launched 1797” followedby “1804 Tripoli”, fighting theBarbary pirates at Tripoli, followed by a listing of four captured French shipsin War of 1812: “1812 GuerrIere”;“JAVA”; “1815 Cyane”; “Levant” all surrounded by a ring of starsbook-ending the phrase: “US FRIGATE CONSTITUTION”, all surrounded by a ropering with decorative rope loops at regular intervals.

The phrase “THIS MATERIAL WAS TAKEN FROM US FRIGATECONSTITUTION” surrounds the top of the outer lip of the two identical plaquesand the phrase “KEEL LAID 1794 REBUILDING 1927” appears around the bottomportion of the outer lip. These plaques were created and sold to help financethe rebuilding and operation of the ship from 1927.

Two plaques are in good condition showing only a fewdiscolorations of the metal both front and back. The second plate-plaque isduller and has one or two paint spots on its front edge.

BRONZE NAVAL SHIP COIN

Round bronze coin depicting port bow view of a naval shipplowing the water. Very nice artist’s rendering of the vessel, water and sky ina richly raised round casting. No writing, signatures, makers’ marks ordesignations of any kind are visible on any part of this coin.
