BuffetCrampon Alto Saxophone #6389, made in 1885.
EarlyAdolphe Sax Licensee.
Upfor offers is this Buffet Crampon alto saxophone #6389, manufacturedin Paris in 1885. Buffet was one of the first licensees of AdolpheSax. This 1885 model has some very interesting features. Thekeywork only extends down to low B. As a result the bell is shortand stubby. See the photos. This horn predates the automatic octavekey. As a result, there are two octave thumb levers. There are nopearls on the stack keys, only metal plateaus. Pinky keys arespoon-like.
Thesaxophone is in fair condition for a 132 year old horn. The silverplating is tarnished, but intact. The lip of the bell has been bentdown slightly, and the neck has been pulled down and bulges slightly. Pads are old, white kid leather balloon type, with a central stitch. Some are missing, others are loose, none are seating. There is noevidence of soldering or dent work being done on this instrument. The wooden Buffet mouthpiece has a deep gouge on the bite plate, andno mouthpiece cover. This saxophone will need restoration, but iscompletely intact. There are no missing parts, as far as I can tell.
Thissaxophone is in “As Found” condition. It was tucked away in anold barn. What we assume is the original case is covered with tooledleather. The handle is missing, but the clasps are intact. It lookslike an old pirate\'s treasure chest. It contains an old “MyMasterpiece” reed box, some cork grease, old corks, and the key tothe case lock.
