Civil War Letter Duc Sisters, 2nd Lt. Virgil Duc 25th SC Eutaw Regiment, Co. E :
$49.99

Letter between Ducsisters of Charleston, SC of October 25, 1864. Easily read and mentionsVirgil; Virgil Duc was a Second Lieutenant in the South Carolina 25thInfantry Regiment \"EutawRegiment\", Company E “Beauregard Light Infantry”. It is written on a partial piece of an invoice of F. H. Duc in Charleston. Talks of Virgil\'s wounds healing well andother personal issues. Letter is 8.5 by 4.5 inches; handled with normalcare. Letter begins on the back of the Duc invoice. I then provided the secondscan; front of invoice. I also provided a third scan of the front of invoice soyou can review the XXX’d out part.

Therewere two Duc heads of householdsinCivil War Charleston; Henry A. Duc and Francis H. Duc; brothers to thebest of my belief. Most correspondence uses their initials, H. A. Duc and F. H.Duc. They are both listed as property owners in 1861 Charleston with Henry asthe first names of Duc and the last one is Francis at the following reference. The last Duc at the reference isFrancis and it shows him as a property with a tinsmith company. He mostprobably lived in the upper floors; common. As a tinsmith it definitely relatesto the letterhead information on the invoice used as a letter. Remember, paperbecame quite scare in the South. [link removed by ]

Virgil Duc (to the best of my belief) was the sonof Francis and nephew of Henry. The letter is to Pamela, referenced as Marie Pamela Duc at [link removed by ].It is signed by Pamela’s sister. However, I am unable to discern her name as hersignature is partially run into the printing on the invoice. The reference forPamela shows she is the daughter of Henry. The reference has a sister to Pamelaof Noemie MarieDucCollins; however, no other sisters. I can onlyassume the reference is incomplete. Virgil Duc is mentioned about half way down at the reference [link removed by ]SecondLieutenant Virgil Duc is listedas a Confederate Officer at [link removed by ]as a Second Lieutenant in the South Carolina25thInfantry Regiment \"Eutaw Regiment\", Company E“Beauregard Light Infantry”.

Old Iron Gaul Ink, used particularly in the 18th century,on some paper there can bleed through over time. That, and the acid in thepaper as well as how and where a document was originally stored over manydecades, can also lead to the brittleness that is sometimes encountered. Hence, where the ink is you can get deterioration and “bleed through”. Of course, all olderdocuments may also have issues as to condition through normal wear and tearover time as well as where and how they were stored. We are, after all, lookingat documents 100 to 250 years old and older in some cases. If you want tostabilize and strengthen the pages you can do so by repairing these areas withloss as well as any breaks on the folds or missing areas with Japanese ricepaper and archival glue.
