Soon after the Civil War started, both Union and Confederate purchasing agents were in Austria buying Model 1854 Lorenz rifle muskets with bayonets. The South imported 100,000; the North 226,924. These bayonets are very distinctive, having a four-sided (quadrangular) blade and a slanted attachment groove. The bayonet is complete with its original, moveable locking ring and screw. The overall length is about 22 inches, with a 19 inch blade with its original point. The bayonet has not been cleaned, and has a dark age patina, with fine pitting to the surface. The lower half has medium pitting. Examples of this bayonet have been recovered on many major Civil War battlefields, indicating wide usage by both armies.
