Collins KWM-2A, w 516F2 power supply, control station, & CP-1 crystal pack:
$1000.00

Hi Folks!
Up for your consideration today is a classic, working Collins KWM-2A tube type 3.4-30 MHz SSB/CW transceiver, 516F2 power supply S/N T-5353, station console (speaker, wattmeter, phone patch), CP-1 crystal pack (missing one xtal, which is installed in the radio), and a manual copy. I have listed the unit as \"non-working, for parts\" because of the missing RF gain control knob. The unit has been tested, and WORKS! Further information below... Here are some specifications (thanks to Universal Radio):

TheCollins KWM-2is a high quality amateur band transceiver featuring CW, LSB and USBmodes. Frequency ranges: 3.4-3.6, 3.6-3.8, 3.8-4, 7-7.2, 7.2-7.4, 14-14.2, 14.2-14.4, 14.8-15, 21-21.2, 21.2-21.4, 21.4-21.6 and 28.5-28.7 MHz plus 23 additional 200 kHz positions for 28-29.7 MHz. Power input is 175 watts PEP on SSB, 160 watts on CW. Power output is 100 watts PEP nominal (slightly lower on 10 meters). Features include:multi-function meter, crystal controlled high frequency oscillator, and a highly accurate analog display with Fiduciary Adjust. 14.75 x 7.75 x 14 inches 18.4 lbs.

TheCollins KWM-2Ais an extended frequency version of the KWM-2 for MARS applications. It has an additional crystal board permitting the addition of 14 crystals to cover frequencies outside the amateur bands. The KWM-2A has afront panel switch and indicatorallowing instant switching between the two crystal boards.

The unit comes with all the standard Ham band crystals (3.4-4, 7.0-7.4, 14.2-14.4, 21.0-21.6, and 28.0-28.6 MHz) minus the 14.0-14.2 MHz xtal (my buddy Fred got that one for his KWM-2A!). The package also includes the rare, almost complete CP-1 crystal pack! It is missing only the 28.4-28.6 MHz crystal, which is actually installed in the radio. If you want a complete set, I suggest you pull that crystal, and swap it with the spare 28.5-28.7 MHz crystal in the CP-1. And, yes, I verified that all 125 slots have the proper crystals in them! There are a few extra crystals, one each of the following: 11.8-12.0, 14.6-14.8, 15.6-15.8, 16.4-16.6, 17.2-17.4, 17.4-17.6, 21.0-21.2, and the aforementioned 28.5-28.7 MHz. The plastic pouch is in reasonably good shape for its age. The plastic is still soft and has not become brittle. It does have some tears starting in a few areas. Note that the PVC material is reacting with the plating on the crystals and causing corrosion. I have pulled a few crystals, and worked this loose with a used Scotchbrite pad and some dishwashing detergent. 409/Simple Green should work well, too. I did a final cleaning with alcohol and a cloth, and the crystals came out looking pretty good.
I recapped the 516F2 about a month ago, so it has all new electrolytics. I also replaced the 5R4 tube socket (this usually breaks due to how it is designed, and how the 5R4 is removed. Do NOT wiggle the 5R4! Pull it straight UP!). The 5R4 and 5U4 were both checked for emission and are good. Yes, you see two 516F2\'s in the listing picture. The bottom one goes with this sale, the one sitting on top of the first one goes with the sale below.
*****Shameless Plug!**** I have a separate 516F2 for sale at sale #323155431171. Minimum offer on it is $250. I recapped it as well, and tested the PS on this KWM-2A. It is a round emblem PS. You can see the power supply in the main station picture, it\'s the PS on top of the bottom PS, and again, is not part of this sale. For the KWM-2A sale, you get the rectangular emblem PS on the bottom of the pile.
The station console has the speaker, as well as a directional coupler/wattmeter and phone patch. The speaker works, as does the directional coupler. The coupler seems to be about on the money power wise, matching my RF ammeter. I’ve checked it forward and reverse on both 200 and 2000 watt settings. Three feet are present on the unit, a fourth has disintegrated. Also included are the two type N 90 degree connectors and the adaptors to go from female “N” to SO-239, so you can more easily run cables to and from the coupler. I have not checked the phone patch for function. An RCA to PL-259 patch cord to go from the transceiver to the station console directional coupler is included, as is an RCA to RCA cable to go from the transceiver 4 Ohm audio output to the 4 Ohm speaker in the station console.
MY PHILOSOPHY: I love electronics!!!, especially older, classic tube type communications and test equipment. Unfortunately, I’m not getting any younger, and I don’t have the time to go through and fully restore everything I come across, or help estates sell. I believe in being 100% honest with people, and checking out equipment as thoroughly as I can in the limited amount of time available to me. As such, I check and replace tubes, clean switches and pots, and do what I can to verify the operation of equipment, and identify any issues. I take the “used/checked\" or \"repairable” concept from places like Fair Radio Sales one step further, and supply manuals where I can, and parts like replacements for paper foils caps along with the sale so the new owner is set up for success, and can pick up where I left off.
All the tubes were tested on my military TV-7 transconductance type tube tester. The tubes (except for rectifiers) were all checked for gain and shorts. In the data below, the first number is the reading. The second underneath it is the minimum good value. Some tubes are single section, most have 2 or 3 sections. V1 read good, but I’m concerned about itsfirst section, so I have included a very late production NOS spare. It’s so new, the box even has a bar code on it! Also, ALL the receiver tubes are heavy duty JAN military tubes. The power supply tubes were checked as well. The 5U4 is an NOS, right out of the box Tung Sol. Here is how they stacked up:

The receiver was checked for proper operation towards the middle of each crystal setting (essentially 3.5-28.5 MHz). In all cases, MDS (Minimum Discernable Signal) was less than 1 uV! Here is how the S meter checked out (tested at 14.250 MHz):

All controls were flushed out with alcohol followed by a Freon, and switches were cleaned with a Freon, and then treated with direct application of 100% DeOxit liquid. All controls work! Crystal calibrator also works. The unit was tested on LSB/USB/CW both transmit and receive, all modes worked. Audio input needed for full SSB output power was in the range of about -35 dBm. Mike jack is a PJ-68, not 1/4\" phono. I measured power out on CW with my Bird 43 and the 250 watt slug. Readings seemed a bit high, so I checked them with one of my RF ammeters: The 250 watt slug is about 10% high, so all readings obtained were derated by 10%. The station console directional coupler corresponded with the RF ammeter power readings. Here is how the transmitter did on CW:
Freq Power out3900 kc 108 watts7100 kc 108 watts14.2 M/c 103 watts21.2 M/c 99 watts28.3 M/c 81 watts
Not sure what the deal is with the plastic collar around the RF gain control. Also, the function switch handle is broken off on the control station, but the switch still works. There is enough of a stub left to actuate it. Expect all the cases to have dings due to the use you would expect from an ex-Federal radio. The rubber feet are not original, but are installed to make the unit complete. Surplus Sales of Nebraska has a nice stock of KWM-2/A parts. The station control can use a decent cleaning. It has original dirt, plus plaster dust. The power supply was cleaned, and does have some corrosion on the choke housings. The transceiver has a partially removed serial number plate, so I do not know the S/N of the unit. The KWM2A has a round emblem, as does the station control module. The power supply has the later rectangular Rockwell/Collins tag. Sorry about the picture quality: I have misplaced my nice camera, and had to resort to using my cellphone to shoot pictures. It was not ideal, but it works until I either find the phone, or the wife buys a new one.
I am selling the items as they are surplus to my needs. Minimum offer is $1000. Due to the age of the equipment, and the fact that I have not restored it 100%, I am selling everything “as is”. Rest assured that this is not your typical pig in a poke: I have checked out the equipment, and it does leave here working. No guarantees beyond that. I have honestly described the transceiver and its accessories. Check my response, and offer with confidence!
Local pickup on the item is available, and encouraged ($50 discount off hammer price)! Shipping will be in three separate packages, with the approximate following packed weights and dimensions:
Transceiver & xtal pack: 20” x 20” x16” package, 26 pounds.516F2 power supply: 14” x 14” 14” package, 33 pounds.Station control: 14” x 14” x14” package, 12 pounds.
My calculations via USPS run about $224 via Priority Mail, and $190 normal delivery (assuming worst case coast to coast shipment). To properly capture actual shipping (because this has to be multiple packages and there is no way to definitively do this the way is set up), I’m going to show it as a $225 handling fee. If it’s more (economy shipping, don\'t expect me to include overnight shipment!), I’ll eat it. If it’s less, I will refund you any excess shipping. I DO NOT OVERCHARGE ON SHIPPING! I charge ONLY actual cost. This is valid only for CONUS: If Alaska and Hawaii are more expensive, I will bill them out at actual cost! If you have Fed Ex or UPS account numbers, I\'ll be happy to refund the shipping and arrange pickups to save you money! Any test equipment, body parts, props, pets, parts, children, gold bars, etc. in the background are strictly incidental and not part of the sale! I am usually able to ship within 24 hours of payment. On rare occasions, it may take me a little longer to get the item out due to work and other responsibilities. Please feel free to ask questions, I’ll answer them as best as I can. Check my response, and offer with confidence! 30+ years professional electronic technician/engineer, Master Certified Electronic Technician. Thanks for viewing this sale!-Tom Herman, PhD., RGA, CETma N1BEC/7
